The process
Tell me the year, make, model and what it's doing. If I can name the likely culprit on the phone, I will — and I'll tell you if it's something a dealer has to touch.
Your driveway, your apartment's back lot, the curb outside work. I need roughly two parking spaces and permission from whoever owns the lot. Street work is fine in most of Highland Park.
Hand tools, a floor jack, jack stands, a scan tool, a battery load tester and a compressor. If a job needs a lift or a press, I'll say so up front instead of improvising in your driveway.
Parts and labor quoted before anything comes apart. If I find something else broken in there, I stop and call you. Nothing gets added without a yes.
Whatever comes off the car goes in a box or on the ground next to it. You paid for it; you should see it. Receipts for every part, photographed and texted.
Who you're calling
I started out at a full-service shop on Figueroa doing brakes and front-end work, then spent six years at a dealership where I learned exactly why people hate going to dealerships. In 2009 I bought a used Astro van, loaded it with the tools I actually used, and started taking the work to people instead of the other way around.
Sixteen years later it's still just me. That's deliberate. When you call, you get the person who's going to be kneeling next to your car — not a service writer, not a rotating cast of techs, not a call center that has to "check with the shop." I know most of my customers' cars by sound at this point, and a good number of them have been calling me since the first van.
I work on domestic and Japanese cars mostly, plus the usual European suspects when the job doesn't need a dealer-only tool. I'll tell you when something is beyond what I can do properly on a driveway — transmissions, alignments, anything needing a lift — and I'll point you to someone on York who'll treat you straight. Sending you to the right place costs me one job and earns me the next ten.

Last call-out of the day goes out about an hour before close. If you're stranded and it's near the end of the day, call anyway — I'd rather know than have you wait until morning.
